Signalong is a system of signs based on British Sign Language for use with children with learning difficulties and difficulties acquiring speech or language. The vast majority of signs used in Signalong are the same as those used in Makaton. The foundation course gives you the skills and confidence to use signs effectively and naturally with the children you communicate with on a day to day basis.

This course takes place over 10 one and a half hour classes.

There will be around 12 people on each course.

Note, this courses is NOT suitable training for using signs with deaf children.

On the course you will:

  • Learn to use over 300 different signs
  • Learn how to use signs effectively and naturally with the children you work with on a day to day basis
  • Learn principles of communication with the hands

Venue for both courses: Beaumont House, Mile End Hospital, Bancroft Road, London, E1 4DG

Tutor: Neil Thompson, Speech and Language Therapist and registered Signalong tutor.

Qualification details:

Foundation course certificate issued by Signalong (www.signalong.org.uk).

Price:

£180 per participant - this includes 15 hours of training, the Signalong phase 1 manual with 355 signs and a certificate for everyone who completes the course. There are a limited number of places at £30 each for parents/carers who cannot afford the full £180.
