Activity/strategy name and materials required How to do the activity Key principles for doing the activity and comments
Posting Game
  • An interesting base board that has pictures of several different items on it and which you can stand up. (Laminate the board, and make a slot above and below each item.) Making the materials could also be an activity in itself;
  • Cards with key vocabulary around a class topic on them (either written on, or using a picture or symbol).

1. Explain to the child that you are going to play a game using words about xyz topic.

2. Show them the base board and check that they know the vocabulary items that are in the picture (these are not the focus of the activity).

3. Explain that they need to listen to the instruction and then post the right word into the right place.

4. Give instructions with 4-5 key words, e.g. 'post the astronaut and the rocket above the red planet.' 'Post the rocket below the orange star.'

  • Ensure that the child clearly understands 'above' and 'below' before using them in the activity. If the child does not understand them, simply make one slot by each item, so that there is not a choice. E.g. 'post the lion and the tiger in the red planet.'
  • Many children will enjoy having a go at giving you instructions too!
  • You could extend this activity by working with one or more children to make it.
