Games with objects

Choose a topic area you want the child to develop vocabulary for or follow a 'First words List'.

Groups of plastic objects to match the words/signs/symbols you want to teach.

A bag

A post box

A puppet

Select the 20 words you want to target.

Make sure the words are everyday words and used frequently. It is easier to target object words.

Find the objects for the words you are targeting e.g. plastic animals if you have an animal theme or plastic food if you have a food theme.

Play games taking the objects out of a bag and labelling and putting back into a bag to a spoken command.

Play games feeding and posting the objects. Can the child feed or post as you instruct?

Choose words to teach that are everyday words and used often.

When you have taught the words with books and pictures and objects point out examples in the child's

Daily life and label e.g. 'Look............tomato'

'Look..............coat' etc

Praise the child's attempts to label and name things.

Picture books around the words you want to teach

Don't overdo asking "what's that", you can also leave long pauses and see if the child fills in the pause.

If they can't/don't say the word, say/sign it anyway.

Catalogues focused on words you want to teach
Camera and objects that you want to teach the child to name
Pictures/photos of the words you want the child to learn

Make a lotto board with one set of pictures and have a spare set of pictures to play with.
