The child will use the correct personal pronoun and auxiliary verb to describe a picture (e.g. "she is...", "he is..." or "they are...").

The child must already be able to use the pronouns "he", "she" and "they" before doing this activity.

Sorting

Pictures of people carrying out a variety of actions:

In each case, you will need a set of 3 pictures showing a male, a female and a group carrying out the same action.

You can draw these yourself, or use a product such as Flash Pro available from www.aba-materials.com;

Prompt cards saying "he is", "she is" and "they are"

1. Show the child the prompt cards and ask them to read the phrase on each.

2. Check that the child knows that the words, "he" and "she" refer to single people, but "they" refers to 2 or more.

3. Explain that when we talk about a single person, we use the word "is" but when we talk about more than one we use "are" instead.

4. Spread the prompt cards out in front of the child.

5. Use one set of pictures. Give the child one of the pictures and ask them to put it below the correct prompt card (e.g. if the card shows a boy eating, put it under "he is").

6. Ask the child to say a sentence to describe the picture (e.g. "he is eating"). Optional: you could also ask the child to write it down.

7. Repeat with all the pictures in that set.

8. Then repeat with other sets, eventually, you will have a pile of "she is", "they are" and "he is" pictures.

You will need to choose your pictures carefully. Most commercially produced sets of action pictures only have one example of the action being carried out, and don't show the same thing being carried out by different people.
