Rhyme Lotto

Pictures of rhyming words.

Lotto boards with one or two of these pictures on each board

OR

Published Rhyming Lotto game.

Give each person a lotto board. Make sure that each child knows what words they have on their boards.

Tell them that if they hear a word that rhymes with a word on their board, they get that card.

You pull the cards one at a time out of a bag and say the word on them. The child who has a word that rhymes with that on their board gets the card.

Rhyme Snap

Pictures of rhyming words on cards.

It works best if you have just 2 or 3 sets rhymes, and several pictures for each rhyme. E.g. light, knight, kite. & whale, snail, nail. Otherwise it takes too long to get a 'snap'!

Rhyme worksheets

'Rhyme Time' by Dean & Howell is useful for worksheets. Make sure you use ones where the child has to judge rhyme, and not produce it.

YOU CAN IMPROVE THIS ACTIVITY BY GIVING SOME EXAMPLES OF WORKSHEETS THAT COULD BE USED FOR WORKING ON RHYME.

Focus on the child listening and saying if a word rhymes or not. Let them have a go at thinking of rhyming words if they want to, but don't focus on this.

When they are able to judge rhyme well, move on to thinking of other rhyming words.
