Use these ideas in one of the activities you do for promoting the use of target sounds in connected speech (for example: "use k and s in connected speech"). Only use self-monitoring strategies in a few of the total activities you do.
Activity/strategy name and materials required | How to do the activity | Key principles for doing the activity and comments |
---|---|---|
Smiley Face Chart with between 3 and 10 smiley faces on it Coloured pen |
Tell the child that when they are doing the next activity, they get to give themselves smiley faces. They are allowed to tick or colour a smiley face whenever they say /k/ or /s/ in a word. |
If they are able to colour the whole chart, they could earn a small reward, e.g. a sticker. Children love correcting adults, so you could take a turn and deliberately get some wrong (or have a puppet do this). |
Tape recorder and cassette, or Dictaphone (something to record on) Paper and pen |
Focus on the words the child says accurately and praise them for using their sounds. Children love correcting adults, so you could take a turn and deliberately get some wrong (or have a puppet do this). |
