The Signalong Group

The Signalong Group is a registered charity, founded in 1992 to provide communication resources for children with severe learning difficulties. The Signalong system was quickly adopted by organisations catering for older students and adults. It is becoming the signing system of choice for work in autism and for total communication applications.

Signs are analysed for handshape, orientation, placement and movement. These elements are combined in text descriptions which are consistent throughout and act as the basis for simple line drawings to illustrate how the sign is performed. Signalong covers needs ranging from pre-school and pre-language, up to employment and independent living.

There is a wide range of solutions, but it is important that the method is chosen according to the needs of the individual.   Signers have the added benefit of not needing to carry extra equipment – our hands are always there!  Consistent use of signing supports the development of both comprehension and expressive language skills.

Sign-supported communication has been shown to be of great value in improving inclusion and self-esteem, and in reduction of challenging behaviour rooted in frustration.

The Signalong Group offers a range of services, including commissioned resources, training, free sign research and advice.
