Arranging letters of name in order

Pencils and paper

Magnetic letters or letter shapes.

Help the child copy round the letters of their name.

Play a game matching the letter shapes to the drawn letter shapes of the child's name.

Reward and praise all attempts.

Can the child arrange the letters of their name without copying a written template?

Set out most of the letters of the child's name so that to start with they have only to complete the last 2 letters - then the last 3 letters etc.

Make these activities as snappy and rewarding as possible by using lots of praise and maybe giving a small reward e.g. sticker for good attempts.

Colouring-in hand drawn letters of the child's name

Overwriting the name

Draw the letters of the childs name, let the child colour them in, cut them out and arrange in the right order.

Can the child overwrite the name they have coloured in? You may need to give hand over hand support to start with.

Writing the child's name on the computer in large letters

When you have written the child's name on the computer can the child copy this? To start with - let the child complete the last letter of their name then the last two letters etc.

Print this out cut out the letters and arrange in order and stick onto paper. Can the child over write the name?

Overwriting the child's name using a dotted template

Write the child's name in dots and between lines.

Can the child overwrite this?

Make a dotted template for all of the child's name except the last letter can the child complete the dotted letters and then the last letter independently?

Reward and praise and go on to see if the child can write the last two letters of their name independently etc.
