Activity/strategy name and materials required How to do the activity Key principles for doing the activity and comments
Sing shortened versions of well known number songs

A number of quickly drawn speckled frogs

Blue-tack

1. Sing 2 Green Speckled Frogs. Use lots of animation

2. Stick one/two green speckled frog pictures on your finger/s to illustrate the song

3. Can the child copy your actions with speckled frogs on his/her finger/s

4. If the child does not want frogs on her/his fingers stick them to the desk in front of the child and point to or touch the frogs right number of frogs as you sing

5. Do this activity with a friend who will be a good role model for the child.

Make this a fun activity

Keep the pace snappy

Use simple language (2/3 words only at one time.)

Give children time to process information and requests.

Where possible work in a quiet place, and make sure the child is attending to you.

Work for short periods only but repeat often.

Adapted song of 10 little monkeys

Miniature figures of people or animals

1. Sing the song but limit the song to 2 little monkeys/children/etc

2. Use the miniature figures of children (or dogs cats etc) and jump them on a toy bed as you sing the song.

3. When the child is familiar with the routine give a choice e.g. say 'Do you want one child/dog...........or two children/dogs to do jumping?' As you give the choice hold out two miniature figures in one hand and one in the other. As the child reaches for one hand say 'You want two children..........this is two' Show the two figures and then show two fingers on your hand and on the child's hand. Sing the song for two children jumping etc.

Snack time

Fruit pieces

1. Cut up fruit into small pieces. Put one piece in one hand and two in the other. Ask the child if they want one/two pieces of fruit. The child may make a choice by looking/reaching. Label the child's choice e.g. 'you want two...this is two' Show the child two on their fingers and your fingers and give the fruit.

2. Can the child ask for one/two using a word?

Stickers on fingers

Two quick drawings of hands

Small stickers

1. Draw a picture of a hand and put one sticker on a finger. Do the same on another piece of paper and put two stickers on two fingers.

2. Say 'what do you want.......... One sticker' and point to the one sticker drawing, 'or two stickers' and point to the two sticker drawing. Does the child indicate a choice? Guide their look or their reach to one of the pictures if needed. Then show one/two fingers held up on your hand, label the choice e.g. 'You want one/two stickers. Show me one/two fingers' and support them holding up one/two fingers (if needed) and then give stickers.
