Welcome

Sing a welcome song or gently tap a drum and say the names of children as you welcome all the children to the group or use a puppet to welcome children with a wave etc.

Being a good singer is not important. You just need to enjoy the activity !

Other forms of welcome are fine if singing is not for you!

Define group rules

You may like to set out rules about 'Good Listening'. Draw them so children can access them easily and remind themselves easily.

You may like to use taped crosses on the floor to show where each child should sit for the group

You may like to make a simple visual time table about what will happen in the group e.g.

  • Welcome
  • Rules
  • Sing song
  • Story
  • Questions
  • Good bye

As events in the group are finished the picture showing that part is removed.

Use pictures to make things clear.

Singing a song

A song choosing board with pictures to represent the songs you want to sing velcroed onto a board

Point to the 'sing song' picture on the visual timetable.

Start off offering the children a choice of 2 songs from the song choosing board.

Children take it in turns to select a song by pointing to the picture or pulling the velcroed picture off the song choosing board.

Sing the chosen song animatedly using gesture and occasionally pausing to see if children can fill in words for the pauses.

As children get used to the format offer a greater number of songs to choose from on the song choosing board.

Use lots of gesture and facial expression.

Repetition is important and children like it.

A story activity

Follow a routine similar to that described above but use simple story books instead.

Choose books with immediate appeal e.g. pop-up books or books with bright simple pictures.

Choose books with short simple text to start with.

Can children share a simple 'discussion' about the story afterwards e.g.

'Look....there's the monster!'

Questions can put pressure on timid talkers but if the group is able to manage questions make them short and easy e.g.

'Show me Spot'

'what is this'

'where is the boy'

Questions like 'what is happening' and 'what happens next' are harder to answer than questions that need a one word answer or maybe just a point.

Same approach as for the singing activity.

Good bye time

Finish the group off with a good bye song or wave from a puppet etc.

This activity is always the same and allows children to adjust to the end of the group and prepare for returning to class.
