Action toys

Action nursery rhymes

1. Use any toy which you need to post or press a key or push a part to make something happen e.g. rolling marbles down a kitchen roll holder, catching fish with a magnet and putting into a pond, press a button and the toy pops up. Set the toy up and take turns to have a go.

2. Play round and round the garden type games. Start the game and pause before the exciting end part and wait for the child to indicate he/she wants you to continue by the child looking at you or moving your hand to show he/she wants more.

Child learns to take turns

Child accepts ending and starting a turn

Child says bye.

1. At home time model 'bye'. Take the child's hand and wave to the person leaving (may be yourself) Say at the same time ' John/Fatima says...........bye Mary'.

2. When an adult leaves the child encourage the adult to wave 'bye' and to name the child as they wave.

3. Set up role play situations with soft toys and act out teddy saying bye to dolly etc Say 'Teddy says.........Bye dolly.' And wave teddy's arm.

Be consistent in the ritual. The only thing that varies is the names of the people involved.

Child greets familiar adults

Soft toys

1. When you see the child for the first time after a break take the child's hand and use it to gently touch your own(or another person's) shoulder and as the child touches the person's shoulder say 'John/Fatima says........Hello Mary!'

2. Act this out with toys e.g. Dolly touches teddy and dolly says 'Hello teddy.' Dolly touches dog and says 'Hello dog' etc.

Child sits in a small group for story time.

Comfy bean bags and favourite book

1. Select one other child to share a book with the child.

2. Hold the book so the child can see the cover page and point out the name of the book.

3. Turn the pages slowly and point out items. Name them and point using 1 or 2 words in a phrase only e.g. 'Look............ apple........red apple.'

4. At the end of a book say 'finished..........the book is finished.'
