| Tactile examples of the child's written name Template of the child's name. Cardboard Sandpaper Shiny paper | 1. Cut out the letters of the child's name in crinkly cardboard/ sandpaper. 2. Match the letters you have cut out to a template of the child's name. 3. Praise the child for matching. 4. Use hand over hand modelling to trace the child's name with their finger over the cardboard/sandpaper letters. 5. At the end say the whole name and point to it making sure the child is focused on the name. | Make sure the child is looking at what you want them to look at. You may need to gently direct their head and point to the thing you want the child to notice. Allow time for the child to explore new material before working with it. Be consistent. Give lots of praise. Use short 2 word phrases. Repeat things. |
| Magnetic letters | 1. Make the child's name with magnetic letters. 2. Offer the child a choice of two letters to start copying the name e.g. if the name is 'Sarah' offer the letters 's' and 'k' - help the child select 's' and put it under the magnetic name you have made. Trace the child's finger round the letter 's'. 3. Continue till the name is complete and praise. | |

Help the child to cut these up and use them to label the child's work or coat peg or tray. 3. Draw attention to the name label as you pass. 4. Can the child reach up and touch the name label? 5. | A laminated example of the child's computer print out name | 1. Help the child to carry this laminated example of their name to a tidy up tray or cupboard shelf that is used to store their work and is labelled with the child's name. Match the two names. Help the child to run their finger along the laminated name and the name on the tidy up tray. | |
| Fishing Paper clips Magnetic fishing rods More computer printouts of the child's name. Plain black and white printouts of a name that is much longer/shorter then the target child's name | 1. Put paper clips on the printed names. Take turns to fish the names using magnetic rods. 2. When you fish the child's name make a big fuss and clap and say the name. When you fish a different name post it into a tissue box or something similar. 3. Can the child do this and demonstrate awareness of their own name? 4. Give lots of praise for successes. |
