Learning early action words

e.g. cut, clap, eat, drink, brush etc

Digital camera

Play food, cutlery, brush, cup etc.

Start by playing with the cutlery and play food. Eat some food yourself and say ' eating banana/apple/bread' etc

Let the child play with the food. As he/she eats say 'Eating banana/apple/bread' etc

Take a photo of the child eating/You eating/soft toys eating etc. Look at the photo on the camera and say 'Look.......eating apple etc.'

Print the photo and put in a book. Show the child the book. Can he/she respond when you ask 'What's this?' You may need to model the answer for the child i.e. 'Eating apple/banana/bread' etc.

Keep language repetitive and at the two word phrase level.

It is OK to have silence between repeats of the phrases.

Using action words and playing with small world people.

Miniature figures

List of target action words e.g. run, jump, sit, sleep, stand, walk

Model making a figure run. Say 'Look..........boy running' , 'Look...... daddy

jumping' etc.

Give the child the figures. Can he make the figures do the actions? Help him/her label the actions by saying 'Daddy jumping/sleeping/running' etc. Ask the child 'What's daddy doing?' You want the answer 'Daddy running' etc

Use lots of repetition.

This can be a fun activity. Children word well with small figures.

Using action pictures/cards

Use a selection of early action word pictures from published materials.

Put 2 or 3 pictures in front of the child. Can he/she post or give to you or feed to a monster cards that you name?

Make the child the 'teacher'. Can he/she tell you to post a card or feed the monster using 2 words including an action word e.g. 'eating apple' or 'daddy sleeping'?

Generalise using two word phrases with an action word.

No special equipment

As you go about the school talk about what you see e.g. 'children eating' at dinner time, 'boys climbing' at play time, 'Mum's talking' at home time. Try to stick to using only two word phrases and the action words you have been teaching.
