Speech Using a target sound in a single word - activities/games set 1  This resource has been viewed by a moderator.

Description:

These activities focus on using a target sound in a single word. Your target sound may be at the beginning of the word, e.g. 's' in 'sun', or in the middle of a word, e.g. 's' in 'glasses', or at the end of a word, e.g. 's' in 'horse'.

Sound Dominoes
  1. Cut out the domino pictures.
  2. Share them out between the players.
  3. The first player places down one of their domino cards on the table and says the words on the card using the target sound.
  4. The next player needs to choose one of their cards with a matching picture and place the macthing pictures next to each other. This player then says the word on their card using the target sound.
  5. The game continues with each player taking a turn. If a player is unable to match a picture on their turn, the play moves to the next player.
  6. The game is won by a player using all their cards, or if no player is able to take a turn, the player who has the least cards. domino game

- If your child finds it challenging to say the sound, praise them for trying and say the word back with the sound used correctly for them to hear. 

- Talk about the sound the word starts with, e.g. 'cat' starts with a 'c' sound.

- Have a go at breaking the word up for the child to copy, e.g. 'let's try and say this together, 'c'  'at'. 

4 in a Row!

1. Print out the template and cut out the counters. if you have a four in a row style game, (e.g. Connect 4) you could use this instead.

2. Make a pile of cards with you target speech sound on.

3. Each take a turn at picking the card from the pile and saying the word. Then ahave a turn at putting a counter on the playing board.

4. The winner is the first person to have four counters in a row - up, down or diagonally.

1. Hand the string/rope up to create a washing line.

2. Place all the picture cards in the bag.

3. Take turns at taking a picture out of the bag, saying the word with the target sound and hanging the picture on the line.

What's in the bag? Guessing Game

1. Place the picture cards in the bag.

2. You each take a turn - the first player chooses a card from the bag and gives the other players some clues so they can guess the picture.

3. The played who guesses the picture keeps the card. When the card is guessed, all players have a go at saying the word on the picture card using hte target sound.

4. The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.

- A blanket or tea towel

1. Lay out 6-8 picture cards containing the target sound.

2. Ask your child to look at them and try to remember what is there as you will cover them up and take one away. 

3. Once your child is ready, cover up the pictures and remove one.

4. Lift the cover and your child has to guess what is missing. Encourage them to say the targetsound in the word.

5. Reverse roles - let your child remove a picture for you to guess.
