Hunt the shape

Plastic shapes

Soft toys

Beakers

Use squares, circles, rectangles etc and play hiding games under soft toys or beakers. As the child or you 'find ' the item label it, for example: 'Look...a circle.'

You need to make the learning very visible.

Allow the child to explore the materials and give time to respond to questions.

Use simple language and as much as possible use the same phrases to name shapes e.g. 'Square...this is a square.'

Use lots of repetition.

Posting

Either:

Ask the children to post specific shapes;

Or:

Take it in turns to take a shape out of a bag, say what its name is and post it;

Or:

See if the child can say the name of a shape for you to post.

Allow the child to explore the materials and give time to respond to questions.

Join dots to make shapes

Dotted pictures of shapes

Pencil, colouring pencils or crayons

A post box (optional)

1. Draw dotted pictures of squares and circles etc.

2. Help the child start off drawing over the shapes and then see if he/she can finish the activity.

3. As a reward the child can colour the shape or cut it out and post it.

4. Label the shape as the child is finishing the dots or colouring or posting or cutting e.g. 'You are cutting a square' etc.

Use simple language and as much as possible use the same phrases to name shapes e.g. 'Square...this is a square.'

Use lots of repetition.
