These activities focus on using a sound in a word and putting this word into a small phrase, e.g. - target word = 'sun', phrase = 'a hot sun'. A phrase is a short sentence with 2-3 words.
Your target sound may be at the beginning of the word, e.g. 's' in 'sun', or in the middle of a word, e.g. 's' in 'glasses', or at the end of a word, e.g. 's' in 'horse'.

Speech sound barrier game - 2 x page of words for your target speech sound or - 2 x page of minimal pairs pictures for your target speech sound - A barrier to put up between you and your child - Some counters in a variety of colours- 2 of each counter. | 1. Choose whether you are going to focus on the page of words starting with your target sound, or the page with minimal pairs pictures. 2. Set up the game by giving each person a word sheet and a set of counters. Set up a barrier between you so you are unable to see each other's page. 3. The first person arranges the counters on their picture e.g. red counter on car, blue counter on cake, green counter on camel. 4. They then tell the second person where to put the counters on their pictures using a phrase with the target sound, e.g. 'green counter on camel'. 5. Once all the instructions have been given, remove the barrier to check that your pictures have the same counters. 6. Swap roles.
| Using the minimal pairs pictures will be harder as your child will have to work out which word to use, e.g. tea/key.
